PERL assisted in the inauguration of the 10-Year Framework of Programs on Sustainable Consumption and Production’s Program on Sustainable Lifestyles and Education (10YFP-SLE) in November 2014 in Nagoya, Japan. This global program, which was agreed upon at the Rio+20 World Summit on Sustainable Development, aims to promote the transition to more sustainable, responsible lifestyles everywhere.
PERL has been involved in a number of capacities since 2011 in the preparations for the 10YFP-SLE. Mainstreaming sustainable lifestyles into decision-making processes at all levels, and in all forms of education, is critical to reversing overcoming global challenges such as climate change, and poverty eradication. The SLE program will act as a partnership to advance sustainable lifestyles at the international, regional and national levels. It will work to ensure that positive contributions are made by sustainable lifestyles to addressing global challenges, such as sustainable consumption and production patterns, climate change mitigation and adaptation, resource and biodiversity conservation, poverty eradication and social well-being.
As a member of the Major Stakeholder Advisory group and as a committed agent for social change, PERL will contribute to the 10YFP-SLE on many levels: by encouraging policy development and curriculum reform to include education for sustainable lifestyles; building capacity amongst educators; creating relevant learning methodologies and materials; and assessing the progress of the activities which are undertaken.
