September 24-26, 2017 the PERL/UNITWIN International Advisory Board (IAB) held its regular meeting at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris as well as hosted an international Think Tank that focused on stimulating the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
The International Advisory Board and the Think Tank explored both conceptual and practical approaches for accelerating sustainability transformations in light of the growing concern that within the rhetoric of sustainable development there has been an increasing level of compartmentalisation, territorialisation and isolation that in turn has impeded both integration and innovation.
The Think Tank participants called for an “unpacking of the growth model rather than a tinkering with change”. The discussions moved from analysis of transition to looking at the transformation of attitudes and behaviour. In addition to addressing individual practice, socio-cultural norms and values as well as institutional and systemic forces were examined. There was a consensus that the key points of intervention and stimuli are directly connected to collaborative learning approaches.
Dr. Kenneth Matengu of the University of Namibia participated, replacing Carmen Martinez Roca as regional coordinator from Africa. Joris Wabeke, from Wageningen University in the Netherlands, who has been an intern at the Center for Collaborative Learning for Sustainable
Development during the 2017 autumn semester also participated in the IAB meeting and Think Tank.
