Learning outcomes

Once the student has passed the course, he/she will have achieved the following learning outcomes:


The student

  • has broad knowledge of the methods for planning time-based media with mood boards and storyboards
  • has broader knowledge of the aesthetically and perceptional use of color  
  • has general knowledge of typography  
  • has knowledge of the principal relationship between form and content 
  • has broad knowledge of different formal pictorial depth characteristics and constructed perspective
  • has, with a perspective from the practical field, knowledge of artistic and design-related practice, intentions, works, styles, genres, motion and institutions  
  • has knowledge of the relationship between the design and its visual elements.  
  • has broader knowledge of principles relating to UI (user interface) & UX (user experience) design 
  • has broader knowledge about the principles of cinematic storytelling 
  • has knowledge of cinematics and editing techniques. 
  • has knowledge of directing 


The student

  • is conversant with principles of image composition and sequence-based storytelling  
  • is able to use different design and drawing techniques to translate and interpret experiences visually, emotionally and aesthetically  
  • is able to express himself/herself visually as a common basis for communication, in dialogue with others 
  • is able to create visual presentations that reproduce accurate observations  
  • Is able to utilize UI & UX design principals to set up logical and efficient interactive systems 
  • is able to use visual pictorial language to create certain expressions and moods in interactive & time-based media 
  • is fully conversant with critical thinking and problem solving in the development process 
  • Is able to set up basic interactivity in a game engine 
  • has developed his/her own stylistic visual point of view 
  • is able to show directing skills in relation to the production of graphics for time-based media 

General competence

The student

  • is able to present his/her work and communicate professional intentions in a clear and professional manner 

Course content

Central topics:

  • bitmap graphics  
  • vector graphics 
  • UI (user interface) & UX (user experience) design 
  • Visual literacy & storytelling  
  • typography  
  • compositing, layers and graphic masking  
  • Implementation of 2D & 3D elements in 3D-Space
  • visualization with a game engine 

Teaching and working methods

The course is organised as a combination of lectures, practical creative exercises, submission of weekly assignments, self-study, plenary reviews and supervision.

Coursework requirements

  • 3-5 individual assignments 
  • attendance at lectures in accordance with the teaching plan  
  • attendance at laboratory teaching in accordance with the teaching plan 

Passed coursework requirements are only valid for 12 months. Students who apply for retake of exams/folder assignments after 12 months will have to pass the coursework requirements again next time the course is taught.


  • 2 individual folder assignments where at least one must be prepared for the Degree show. Each assignment counts 50% of the final grade 

Alphabetical grades are used, on a scale from A to F, with E as the lowest passing grade.
